Starting January 17th Women's Faith Connection begins a new study - "Lord Change My Attitude" by James MacDonald.
Do you need an attitude adjustment? Most of us do! In this study James MacDonald reveals how deeply God cares about our attitudes. Based on the Israelites journey out of Egypt (with lots of New Testament input and contemporary examples), James shows how attitudes can affect whether someone stays in the wilderness with negative attitudes, or enjoys the blessings of the promised land with God honoring attitudes.
This is an 11 week study. Each session will include a DVD presentation, and a small group time for discussion and prayer. A weekly study guide is also available.

New Executive Director for Camp Imadene

On behalf of the Island Christian Camping Society Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to announce Andy Renton as Executive Director of Camp Imadene, effective June 2011.

The position of Executive Director is effectively replacing our current position of Camp Administrator that Vicki Podetz has performed admirably for the last decade. Vicki will be staying on to help with the transition until September when she will be retiring. In this new position, Andy will be responsible for overseeing Imadene’s day-to-day operations, managing the use and maintenance of our beautiful properties, leading the paid and volunteer staff, strategically developing new programs, and extending camp’s reach into the community.

Andy is well known within the Imadene community, serving in both paid and volunteer capacities over the last 10 years. He brings a passion for camping ministry and it’s role in sharing the gospel of Christ. Andy and his wife Jennie-Lynne met at Imadene, and it has remained an integral part of their relationship. They bring to camp their 2 year-old daughter, Leilani, and are expecting another child in the fall.

For the last 7 years, Andy has served as the Youth Pastor of Lambrick Park Church in Victoria, BC. He has just recently completed his Masters degree in Leadership Studies from UVic, which included a thesis on tools that assess nonprofit organizations. He also studied Christian Studies at Regent College in Vancouver. Through his experience and education, he has developed a knowledge base that the Board sees as being ideally suited for this new position, alongside the spiritual leadership he has provided as a pastor.

Andy is honoured to be given this opportunity to serve at Imadene and be able to influence thousands of individuals for Christ each year. He and Jennie-Lynne believe this to be a calling that God placed on them years ago, and something that God brought them together to accomplish.

We feel fortunate to have Andy as Imadene’s new Executive Director. We believe God has set him apart for this ministry, and he brings passion, vision, and commitment to Imadene and the message of Christ. His dedication to sharing the gospel and mentoring others into a mature faith will help us further our mission of equipping more believers to serve God.

As we enter a new summer season, we would like to thank you for your continued support and prayers. This ministry would not be possible without you, its faithful supporters.

LOVING ENEMIES
The theme this week is "loving one's enemies". The final relational implication of the Spirit of the Law of being God's salt and light in the world that Jesus addresses in Matthew 5 is about "loving enemies". Jesus says that, as we love our enemies, we demonstrate that we are in deed God's children. We will be "perfect" (complete) as we exemplify Jesus to others. We will confirm our commitment to live in that grace by celebrating communion together.

Thoughts on Groups

The Story of Sweet Pea

On Sunday morning, I (Andy Renton) spoke a message on Matthew 5:10-12, the Beatitude related to persecution.

The main point of my talk was that Jesus gave us a way of looking at the world (the right way!) that is completely opposite to how usually view it. He told us that the spiritual impacts of our choices and actions are more important than the temporary worldly impacts (whether that be social, financial, physical, or even fatal).

One story I was not able to share was the story of Sweet Pea. This is a story I heard from Gordon McLean, author of 'Cities of Lonesome Fear: God Among the Gangs' among other books. He visited LPC in the nineties and shared some of his stories with the youth group. The story of Sweet Pea is also found in his book, on p. 115 (I have a copy if you want to borrow it).

Sweet Pea shows us what a teenager can do when his worldview shifts and he realizes that there is nothing more important than living for God, and being willing to die for Him.

Sweet Pea was a young African-American active in the Spanish Cobras on Chicago’s Near North Side. He was a natural leader. With a world of opportunities ahead of him, he chose to direct his talents to the streets, with its excitement and fast money.

Late one night, Sweet Pea and his brother came home to find a drunk acquaintance of their mother’s attacking her. The brothers freaked out and beat the man to death. It wasn’t long before they and their mother were arrested for murder.

Release on bail, and looking for a way to get his mom and great lawyer, Sweet Pea decided armed robbery was the best way of getting a quick dollar. Not a good choice. He was caught, and this time he wasn’t getting out on bail.

Inside jail he started coming to youth services put on by Gordon McLean and his team. He attended regularly and became good friends with the people there. He was straightforward, helpful, and honest, qualities in short supply around a jail. He was also quite open about wanting to find something better than what the streets had to offer.

Anything Sweet Pea did, whether good or bad, he did with all his energy. When he eventually gave his life to the Lord, it was no temporary escape. He intended to be as true a follower of Christ as he could, no matter what it might cost.

And it did cost.

One day, a young kid named Drac was admitted into the jail. He was not a gang member and had no idea about the power structures that existed among the inmates. On his first day, he sat down at a table reserved for the leaders of a specific federation of gangs.

One angry youth was about to jump Drac when Sweet Pea stepped in. Sweet Pea said he would talk to the new kid later and explain the situation to him, and that for now just it go. However, as Drac tried to leave the table, confused and scared, he accidently spilled some milk on the clothes of one of the gang leaders. Again Sweet Pea stepped in.

That night the group called a meeting to decide the fate of the new guy. They were angered by the incident and decided that Drac deserved a beating. Furthermore, since Sweet Pea had protected him earlier, he was the one that would have to carry out the assignment.

“There’s no way, you guys,” Sweet Pea said. “The kid is brand new here and had no idea where to sit at lunch. You guys freaked out and made him all nervous, which made him spill the milk. It was all an accident. You can’t give the kid a beating for that!”

But there was no swaying the crowd. They were ticked, and someone was going to pay. As they argued, they got angrier, and finally decided that if Sweet Pea wouldn’t do the work, then he would get the beating himself.

“Then go ahead,” he said. “I’m not going to touch that kid no matter what, so you do what you gotta do.” Once again, they weren’t swayed, and Sweet pea submitted to a beating that left him bruised and sore for weeks.

The next day, Sweet Pea had all the intentions of staying in bed, when a friend came in. “Come on man, aren’t you going to get up?”

“Who wants to know?” grumbled Sweet Pea.

“Well, it’s just that the guys are taking bets on how many days you’re going to stay in bed.”

Sweet Pea had given them one victory last night, and he was not about to hand them another. They could knock him down, but they weren’t going to keep him there. He got up and went on as if nothing had happened. He gained even more respect within the jail because of the event and was able to attract more youth to the ministry nights as well. One of the guys that came out, and who later came to know the Lord was Drac. No one was happier than Sweet Pea.

Another boy that had come to know the Lord at the jail was named John. Him and Sweet Pea had become quite close friends, despite the fact they were enemies on the streets as members of opposing gangs.

John was in jail because he was charged with murdering one of Sweet Pea’s fellow gang members. One day, for some reason police photos of the victim and murder scene strangely showed up on the jail wing, and major tension began to rise.

With lookouts watching for guards, the gangs held another meeting. The group wanted to place a hit on John in the jail, and Sweet Pea was on the spot again. However, he did not back down and shared his opinion defiantly.

“Who sets you guys up as judge and jury? Most of us have murder cases of our own, so what makes him any different? Just leave him alone!” he shouted.

But again, the boys in his gang would not budge. John had to die.

Eventually, Sweet Pea saw this truth. “Okay, okay,” he said. “You guys win, John gets the hit.”

Finally Sweet Pea was starting to act like his old self! The group started to murmur their delight.

“But there’s just one thing,” he continued. “Before you kill John, you’ll have to kill me.” Sweet Pea made the statement so calmly that the boys weren’t sure if he was serious.

“Before anyone takes out John, you’ll have to take me out first. Now, I’ll leave while you guys talk it over and decide who gets the honour.”

Sweet pea walked away, leaving the group in stunned silence. Eventually, they broke up in confusion. No one was going to take on Sweet Pea after last time, and certainly no one was going to kill him. He was one of the highest ranking and most respected boys on the streets and in the jail.

Several boys stopped by Sweet Pea’s cell later on that night and in the days that followed. They wondered why he would do such a thing. Why would he take such a risk?
“Sweet Pea explained it easily, “it wasn’t a risk; I meant what I said. I did it because what divides John and I on the streets isn’t nearly as important as what unites us as brothers in Christ.”

It was Sweet Pea’s strength of character and commitment that influenced many young men on the jail deck to turn to the Lord. They in turn reached out to others, and that influence continued long after Sweet Pea was transferred off the wing.

And a Slime Time Was Had By All

Lambrick Park Church had a full house on Thursday, October 28th for the first annual Slime Time evening. Over 85 kids had a blast with the various games around the church along with some serious pumpkin carving that we proudly displayed on our lawn Sunday evening. The SIS program from the UVic Chemistry Department turned the kids into mad scientists as they all got to make slime to take home!

On Sunday evening, we opened the doors to the community for Treat Street. Lots of candy got handed out as the kids went around the basement knocking on doors.
